Although factory digitization is becoming more and more widespread, according to a new study, more than 80% of current warehouses\u00a0have no automation. This is partly because businesses are still apprehensive about the cost as well as the capabilities that Robots bring. However, another assessment shows that most warehouses using AMR Robots have very impressive business results. For example, some case studies report a 300% increase in productivity in order picking.<\/p>\n

I. Advantages of using ARM Robots for internal logistics:<\/h2>\n

1. Robot\u00a0AMR works independently<\/h3>\n

One of the biggest advantages of AMR is that it works independently, which means it can scan an area on its own for obstacles. The AMR robot can automatically dodge obstacles while moving in the work area. Example: Instead of an entire path, the AMR Robot is given a start and an end point, instead creating its own path, while scanning and avoiding\u00a0anything that gets in its way.<\/p>\n

In addition, the warehouse map can be pre-uploaded to the robot, which saves time and makes the process safer. With such a map, the robot can more\u00a0easily\u00a0detect obstacles, i.e. things that are not on the map, providing more flexibility and uptime.<\/p>\n

2. Robot\u00a0AMR\u00a0very flexible<\/h3>\n

An AMR does not need to follow a specific route when going from point A to point B.\u00a0 The AMR robot can create its own route and avoid obstacles. The AMR\u00a0 can easily be reprogrammed for new routes or new warehouse layouts.<\/p>\n

3\u00a0. Robot\u00a0AMR\u00a0quickly installed<\/h3>\n

All necessary software for robot operation is included. There is no need to setup\u00a0connection between the mobile robot and the existing software of the production line.<\/p>\n

Depending on the operation\u00a0and the complexity of the task\u00a0, an AMR\u00a0(\u00a0or a group\u00a0m)\u00a0can\u00a0work together with\u00a0the rest of the production line components within 2-6 weeks.<\/p>\n

4. Various clamps and peripherals compatible with the AMR . Robot<\/h3>\n

Various top modules can be mounted on the robot, such as racks, crates, elevators, conveyors, clamps, hooks or collaborative robots. The latter is actually part of a slightly different category of robots called AIMMs (Autonomous Industrial Mobility Operators). AIMMs can be used to move objects between different production lines or act as a replacement for a malfunctioning robot, reducing downtime for replacement or repair of a replacement robot. Either case can significantly increase OEE (overall equipment efficiency), which is the usual standard by which production productivity is measured.<\/p>\n

II. Defect:<\/h2>\n

1. Robot AMRs are better for light tasks<\/h3>\n

A major drawback of mobile robots is the limitation of load capacity. For example, the mobile robot Doog can carry a maximum load of 300 kg and a towing capacity of 600 kg while the AGV and traditional forklift can carry 65 and 31 tons respectively.<\/p>\n

2. AMR robot moves slower and needs charging time<\/h3>\n

For safety reasons\u00a0, most AMR Doog Robots cannot travel above 7.5 km\/h, which is\u00a0slower than a forklift. In terms of operating time, it can go up to 20km, while charging takes 8 hours and this is considered a lot of downtime in an industrial environment. Of course, one can purchase additional AMR Doog Robots and charge them while the others are working. Naturally, this is a bigger investment.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0AMR\u00a0causes some safety risk<\/h3>\n

Using the AMR Doog Robot may cause some safety problems. For example, they must not be overloaded up to or beyond their limits, especially if the load is bulky. In the event of sudden braking, the load may fall off and injure personnel. Safety specifications should be an important part of the procurement and operation of the AMR solution.<\/p>\n

One final note is about cost. If the investment is valued in the short term, it is considered very expensive. However, considering a broader perspective, AMR will\u00a0have long-term benefits\u00a0.<\/p>\n
