Autonomous vehicle AGV is a type of automatic cargo transport robot that is present in most smart factories (Smart Factory) in general and logistics systems around the world in particular. Currently, we can see AGV self-propelled vehicles anywhere, from production lines, assembly lines, finished goods warehouses, e-commerce warehouses to supermarkets, trade centers or even stores. hospital, airport, etc.

I. What is an AGV autonomous vehicle?
AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) is an unmanned vehicle, used to transport products, goods, supplies and materials in diverse applications in factories, warehouses, .. .
The AGV is also known as the Towing Robot or Automatic Cargo Robot. Currently, AGV self-propelled vehicles are used in activities of many industries such as: automobile industry, electronics, logistics, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, consumer goods, etc.
II. Self-propelled vehicles AGV
Currently, there are 3 types of AGV self-propelled vehicles: trailers, forklifts and heavy trucks. Each type has its own requirements for each business and plant.
1. Traction AGV self-propelled vehicle:
Loads of up to several tons can be towed, minimizing the hazards associated with the use of large heavy equipment. This tow truck is capable of moving loads from 4.5T to 23T. Heavy-duty towing AGVs can tow sub-assemblies, machine components, equipment and other materials that are hazardous to humans.
2. Forklift AGV self-propelled vehicle:
Can pick up, stack materials, move and arrange pallets. Forklift AGVs can replace both conventional forklifts and the operator, thus saving a lot of money for businesses. The AGV forklift can also move large paper rolls, steel rolls, motors and other vehicles over any condition depending on the program installed.
3. Heavy duty AGV self-propelled vehicle:
While towing AGVs and lifting AGVs are capable of handling heavy loads, in certain industries such as aviation, large construction vehicle manufacturers and shipbuilders will require AGVs to withstand heavy loads. very large load up to 113 tons. For these specific industries, AGV manufacturers have created machines with large bases, sturdy wheels and wide platforms. In many cases, the AGV must be tailored to exactly match the requirements of the customer’s industry.
IV. Navigation technology of AGV KUKA self-propelled robot:
Navigation software KUKA Navigation Solution enables mobile robots and transportation systems to operate autonomously. Accordingly, with the help of SLAM methods, an environment map is created, allowing the mobile robot to reach its destination safely.
The autonomous robot receives commands over a WLAN and then performs the driving and problem-solving tasks in a completely self-contained manner. AGV uses algorithms to determine location, plan routes, and take on payloads.
All KUKA AGV autonomous robotic systems can be equipped with the KUKA Navigation Solution navigation software. This makes them flexible and portable. The navigation solution also includes an ideal fleet management system that helps meet the latest needs of autonomous robots with tailored interfaces – perfectly suited to industries 4.0.
AGV’s smart navigation solution includes:
- An industrial computer, integrated into the AGV system and the actual navigation software
- Software for managing all vehicles and scheduling dispatch
1. Advantages of navigation software KUKA Navigation Solution
Autonomous control:
KUKA Navigation Solution enables automatic navigation on mobile platforms – with no risk of collisions and no need for artificial markers. The software collects all the data from the safety laser scanner and the wheel sensor and uses them to create a corresponding map of the surroundings using the SLAM method. The system responds to changes in the environment – which often happens in a flexible logistics system. The use of virtual routes makes it possible to move the platform exclusively along defined routes.
Flexible software integration:
KUKA provides an Eclipse-based development environment that can be used to program applications in Java. Modular Java API with interfaces tailored to the requirements of mobile robots allowing integration of third-party software. Existing platform groups can be simply updated and other platforms can be added or removed from the existing system.
Precise positioning
KUKA Navigation Solution offers the following options for highly accurate positioning of the mobile platform in its environment:
- Good localization for pinpointing the vehicle’s position relative to an object or in an environment
- Good positioning to increase location accuracy
- Relative positioning through CAD-based object recognition and tracking, e.g. for picking
Software independent of hardware:
KUKA Navigation Solution’s hardware-independent navigation software can be used for different platform kinematic systems. It can handle any principle of motion, including Mecanum wheeled three-dimensional vehicles, such as the KUKA omniMove. Machine parameters are configured through a standardized interface.
- Freely expandable, modular setup
- Additional features, such as object recognition and tracking and relative positioning, enable coordinated planning.
