AMR robot in smart factory

When the industrial wave 4.0 broke out, it was also the time when factories increasingly applied automation to production lines. Along with industrial robots, AMR robots (Automatic Mobile Robots) are also increasingly popular because of their practicality and benefits in factories.

I. What is AMR Robot?

AMR robot (Automatic Mobile Robot) is a robot that can understand and move on its own in its environment without direct human supervision or on a predefined path.

AMR Robot is a vehicle that uses Lidar sensors and onboard processors to automatically move through the AMR Robots learning the environment, remembering the location. The robot then automatically plans its own path from a reference point (a location or destination in the environment) to another point.

The AMR robot is the latest automation innovation to transform the tasks of traditional robots through increased versatility and variety of applications.

II. Technologies applied to AMR Robot:

Navigation: Using technology like LiDAR sensor & Simultaneous Mapping and Mapping (SLAM). AMR robot will determine the best route between waypoints

LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is a scanner that emits infrared light rays to the surrounding environment, then measures the time it takes for the light rays to reflect back. If a ray of light takes a long time to reflect back, the object it hits will be far away and vice versa. The resulting light beams and sensors in the scanner detect the depth of its surroundings.

Through Lidar technology and cameras, AMRs are capable of determining location and surroundings. Since then AMRs plan their own path, which is demonstrating the “autonomy” of this robot.

III. Advantages of AMR Robot:

1. AMR robot works independently

One of the biggest advantages of AMR is that it works independently, which means it can scan an area on its own for obstacles. The AMR robot can automatically dodge obstacles while moving in the work area. Example: Instead of an entire path, the AMR Robot is given a starting and ending point, instead creating its own path, while scanning and avoiding anything that gets in its way.

In addition, the warehouse map can be pre-uploaded to the robot, which saves time and makes the process safer. With such a map, the robot can more easily detect obstacles, i.e. things that are not on the map, providing more flexibility and uptime.

2. AMR robot very flexible

An AMR does not need to follow a specific route when going from point A to point B.  The AMR robot can create its own route and avoid obstacles. The AMR can easily be reprogrammed for new routes or new warehouse layouts.

3 . AMR robot quickly installed

All necessary software for robot operation is included. There is no need to setup connection between the mobile robot and the existing software of the production line.

Depending on the operation and the complexity of the task , an AMR ( or a group m) can work together with the rest of the production line components within 2-6 weeks.

4. Various clamps and peripherals compatible with AMRs

Various top modules can be mounted on the robot, such as racks, crates, elevators, conveyors, clamps, hooks or collaborative robots. The latter is actually part of a slightly different category of robots called AIMMs (Autonomous Industrial Mobility Operators). AIMMs can be used to move objects between different production lines or act as a replacement for a malfunctioning robot, reducing downtime for replacement or repair of a replacement robot. Either case can significantly increase OEE (overall equipment efficiency), which is the usual standard by which production productivity is measured.
